The past few seasons have signed an accord: the best approach to classics is an unconventional one. Be it playing with shapes, sizes and proportions; turning a piece of clothing into another; or reimagining ways of wearing things—designers have spent their precious time revamping our beloved trans-seasonal staples with added relevance, and it’s all about rejecting the rules.

A former employee of the master of de/re-construction himself (Margiela), Lutz Huelle and his reimagined wardrobe classics is leading the way. Seductively uniting the familiar with the strange, Huelle is mixing and matching shapes, structures and usage occasions across categories and gender divides, with a special fondness for repurposing old garments into new. Some of his most coveted designs include a trench coat draped and turned into a dress, a sweatshirt made into outerwear, and a denim jacket gone belted blazer. These are light-hearted yet utilitarian reinventions of the staples that have come to clog our wardrobes, playfully lifting the mood for spring.
