‘The idea was to make a formal garment feel fresh and new. He did the same kind of iterative experimentation with the boxy tweed jacket—a most classic French garment—by splicing in upcycled denim at the front placket, shoulder seams, hem, and cuffs. It’s a high-low mash-up and a guaranteed best-seller on his e-commerce site, not just in tweed, but also in black sequins or black duchesse.’ Nicole Phelps on Lutz Huelle S/S 2024, VOGUE RUNWAY

When I started making little films showing how to transform an old Tshirt into a new, sexy top on Instagram during lockdown I never expected the number of brilliant reactions and comments I got .. it became a way to keep on working, to share and communicate, to show that anything can be inspiring and we can make something out of not much at all, no special skills or means required. I did several ones, and here’s the last one , made for VOGUE Runway, organized by the very fabulous Steff Yotka.

..the thing with inspiration is that it’s never foreseeable nor can it be planned. I’ve spent hours staring at a white page waiting in vain for the sparks to fly, only to be waking up at three in the morning with my brain on fire 😝This collection, Spring/ Summer 2014, happened while sitting in a cab going to work in Italy. I had arrived in the morning and stepped out of the plane into gorgeous sunshine, and for a second I had an incredible urge to tell the driver to go past the factory and straight to the next beach… so this collection became about spending the day at the beach still dressed for work- a collection in black bleached out by the sun. Tie-dye, fading prints, stripes, bleached knits and wet- look wool and denim, as if having rushed into the sea with your suit still on. Dresses and tops were draped like towels slung over the shoulders or tied around the waist. My favourite look was a bleached biker jacket, partly draped, worn over a pair of oversized denim pants bleached out towards the upper part.

‘..the most exciting use is in a nylon bomber jacket, where Huelle cut off all the ribbing at the collar and hem, spliced it horizontally, and inserted a ribbon belt. It’s as elegant as an opera coat, but as durable as a piece of workwear. Other ingenious twists include wool Fair Isle cardigans with insertable nylon plackets (global warming has rendered big-wool-sweater season too short, thus the cardigan) and a halter top he cut from an old T-shirt, which he shows off how to make in his collection video.’ Steff Yotka on Lutz Huelle F/W 2021 on VOGUE RUNWAY

“..auf den ersten Blick mag es vielleicht verwundern, dass Lutz Huelle begeistert von Dingen wie einer Chanel-Jacke reden kann. Dabei macht er ja genau das Gleiche wie einst Coco Chanel, als sie die Jacke erfand: Er erschafft neue Klassiker aus dem Vorhandenen, das Chanel-Kostüm des 21. Jahrhunderts, wenn man so will.” Hella Schneider on Lutz Huelle’s Show at Berghain, on VOGUE Germany
